Top shows rallycross legend, 6 times European Champion and general badass Martin Schanche in his Ford RS200 in 1988. Bottom shows Andreas Bakkerud (3rd in WorldRX this year) and his Focus RS this year.
As wild as the Focus RS is to look at in Bakkerud’s hands, it isn’t very spectacular compared to what watching Schanche in his best years must have been..

They had rallycross in the 80's? For some reason I thought it was a new thing.

The Group B cars were actually pretty big in the 90's after they were banned from rally. The RS200 and the Metro 6r4 were actually rather successful in European Rallycross. The European Rallycross championship has been around since 1973 though rallycross wasn’t big until GRC and WorldRX started a few years back.

Especially in Nordic countries and UK it was a very big thing in 80's. Retired group B rally cars were well available in those times.

It was quite big in the late 80's and 90's with the Group B cars. Rounds in Norway, Sweden, Germany and UK could gather 20 000 spectators just like today.

RS200 road car was faster than the current Focus RS road car. Also, one is a Focus.

I like when people complain about ‘the boxes’ that have been added to the Fiesta WRC and Focus RS rally cars.
Because it’s not like they didn’t have them before.

Wasn’t big in the States you mean, it’s been big in Europe for a long ass time. Pat Doran is a household name

While it has been popular for a long time in Europe you can’t deny that WorldRX has brought the sport to a much wider audience than European Rallycross has.

Wider outside Europe absolutely. Inside Europe though attendance and viewership numbers are pretty similar
